| EDF Response to the European Commission Green Paper “Equality and non-discrimination in an enlarged European Union” |
In the framework of the European Commission consultation procedure on the European Commission Green Paper “Equality and non-discrimination in an enlarged European Union”, the European Disability Forum (EDF), in cooperation with its member organisations, sent its contribution on 31 August 2004 with a response on behalf of the European disability movement.
In its response EDF sets out its concerns and ideas on how to move forward and bring about real change for disabled persons in Europe and for all persons discriminated against on grounds of disability among other grounds.
EDF advocates for both legislative and non-legislative initiatives. However, EDF would like to see the outcome of this consultation process to be a revival of interest and expression of real commitment on the part of decision makers about the need for further non-discrimination legislation across the board. Without a clear legal framework to protect the rights of discriminated persons in all areas of life, it will not be possible to move ahead and the declarations of the EU on equality, fundamental and human rights will have very little true meaning.
The response also includes a series of recommendations and proposals for actions. |
