| Irish “Signing Family” DVD |
In Northern Ireland, a DVD called "Signing Family" has been put together for Deaf parents who have hearing children and Hearing parents who have Deaf children.
The DVD has been produced in both British Sign Language and Irish Sign Language.
It includes chapters on:
- language acquisition
- stages in language acquistion
- bilingualism – the benefits
- parents of Deaf children – personal experiences
- Deaf parents of hearing children – personal experiences
- How to help your child –tips
- Children stories
It is hoped that the DVD will inspire people to use the Bi-lingual approach of using sign language and a written language as it is not currently used in either pre-school or education in Northern Ireland.
It is also hoped that it will benefit future generations during their important early years and equip them linguistically and socially for school and the wider world outside the home.
The launch of the DVD will be aimed at professionals working with parents, those working in educational settings, hearing parents of deaf children and Deaf parents with hearing children. |
